Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are predominantly nuclear RNA-binding proteins that form complexes with RNA polymerase II transcripts. These proteins function in a variety of cellular activities, ranging from transcription and pre-mRNA processing in the nucleus to cytoplasmic mRNA translation and turnover. hnRNP C1/C2 is one of the most abundant proteins in the nucleus, and shown to have roles in cellular differentiation and proliferation. A novel nuclear export is activated by the ROCK signaling pathway to exclude hnRNP C1/C2 from the nucleus, by which the compartmentalization of specific hnRNP components is disturbed in apoptotic cells. Overexpression of hnRNP C1/C2 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues has been reported in 70 HCC samples, suggesting its potential as a protein tumor marker.
